Fintech startup repurposes the infamous Brexit bus for a more truthful marketing campaign

Some say the infamous Brexit bus that erroneously claimed £350m a week gets sent to the Europe Union and instead suggested routing that into the NHSswayed the European referendum in 2016, as such it is no surprise a fintech startup is relying on the power of that very bus to get its message across.

Although the figure has been knocked down by UK foreign secretary, Sir David Norgrove as a “clear misuse of statistics” – it has been recently reused by former London mayor Boris Johnson.

Fintech company Monese is capitalizing on the notoriety of the bus by subverting the £350m offer with one of its own, it is promoting its banking offering by letting people send €350m worth of money with zero fees. The bus features the strapline ‘Take Control of your Banking’.

The bus, first spotted by The Next Web, has been integrated into a clever marketing stunt that will see it tour Europe.

Norris Koppel, founder and chief executive of Monese, said: “To celebrate our official launch to everyone, we wanted to give all our customers an additional benefit to using Monese, by enabling them to send their money, fee free. To drive this message home we’re taking the now infamous Brexit Bus on a tour across Europe. But changing it to a promise we know we can keep.”

He added: “Our expansion is aimed at breaking down financial barriers when crossing borders within the EU, by providing a simple way to manage your money on the go. We believe that people should be able to live, travel, and work freely, without the administrative burdens and restraints of legacy financial systems. Monese takes the stress and hassles out of making this possible – and I’m delighted that we’re already seeing a growing demand from our existing customers.”

Monese launched in 2015 and serves as a mobile-only bank.
